Manjarabad Fort : A Best-Kept Secret of Karnataka
Amidst the lush green Western Ghats lies the magnificent Manjarabad Fort, an architectural wonder of medieval India that continues to enchant visitors with its elegance and historical significance. Located in Hassan district, Karnataka, the fort is an ideal destination for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and nature lovers.

Built by Tipu Sultan, the erstwhile ruler of Mysore, in the 18th century, the Manjarabad Fort is a unique hexagonal-shaped fort, with a moat, bastions, and ramparts, standing tall at an elevation of 3,240 feet. The fort is strategically located atop a hill, from where one can get a panoramic view of the surroundings, including the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.
As we approached the fort, we were awestruck by its amazing structure and beautiful design. The fort’s hexagonal shape is an engineering marvel, as it provides six points of defense, making it virtually unattackable. The moat, which encircles the fort, adds to its defensive strength and showcases the expertise of its builders.
Inside the fort, we explored the various chambers and rooms, each with its unique design and purpose. The central dome-shaped structure, resembling a mosque, was used as a watchtower and an observatory. The fort’s underground tunnel system is also worth mentioning, as it connected the fort to various other parts of Tipu Sultan’s kingdom and was used to transport troops and supplies during times of war.
Apart from its historical significance, the Manjarabad Fort also offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. The fort’s location on top of a hill provides a bird’s eye view of the Western Ghats, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The panoramic view of the mountains, valleys, and forests from the fort is truly mesmerizing and a sight to behold.
Overall, my visit to the Manjarabad Fort was an enriching experience, as I got a glimpse of Karnataka’s glorious past and its rich cultural heritage. The fort’s unique design, location, and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in architecture, history, or nature.
